Traditional Fish and Chips restaurant

The "Rock and Sole Plaice" in London is a historic restaurant that is considered the oldest fish-and-chips establishment in the city and has shaped British culinary culture since its founding in 1871. Located in the bustling Covent Garden area, it has built a reputation for high-quality, sustainably sourced food over one and a half centuries. The restaurant attracts both locals and tourists seeking an authentic taste experience and has been mentioned in over 3,000 travel guides in more than 20 languages – a testament to its international recognition. Despite its historical heritage, it remains a place that combines tradition with an uncomplicated, down-to-earth charm.

Best Fish and Chips in London

The atmosphere at "Rock and Sole Plaice" is casual and welcoming, characterized by a rustic yet cozy ambiance. The interior spans two floors with simple wooden tables and an open kitchen that allows guests a direct view of food preparation. The walls are lined with white tiles, reminiscent of classic British fish-and-chip shops, while maritime artwork and faded photographs from the Covent Garden theater world add a nostalgic touch. On nice days, the outdoor area with large umbrellas and wooden benches invites diners to enjoy their meals al fresco – a welcome option during the warmer months. Especially on busy days, it can become lively and crowded, highlighting the relaxed energy of the place.

Sustainable British cuisine experience

Culinary-wise, "Rock and Sole Plaice" is synonymous with the perfection of the British classic fish and chips, with ingredients sourced exclusively from sustainable British suppliers. A highlight is the "Cod and Chips," where the cod is fried in a light, crispy batter made according to the same traditional recipe for over 145 years – resulting in juicy fish with a golden crust, accompanied by thick, hand-cut chips. The "Lemon Sole," a delicate flounder that impresses with its fine texture and mild flavor, is also popular and is often served with homemade tartar sauce, praised for its freshness and use of dill. For variety, dishes such as "Steak and Kidney Pie," a hearty pastry filled with steaming goodness and a crumbly crust, round off the British cuisine experience. Side dishes like creamy pea puree or spicy curry sauce perfectly complement the meal.

Authentic dining in Covent Garden

The beverage selection is equally well-thought-out and diverse. In addition to a range of British beers, including the house-brewed "Rock and Sole Lager," there are classic soft drinks to refresh the meal. Notably, guests can enjoy their meal with a cold pint, which perfectly balances the salty flavor of the chips. The restaurant values tradition but also offers small modern touches, such as seasonal sides or the option to order takeaway – a practical solution for those exploring Covent Garden.

Historic restaurant with charm

Service is often described as friendly and efficient, with staff striving to provide guests with an authentic experience. However, during peak times, such as lunch rushes or weekends, there may be wait times, and the limited size of the establishment sometimes leads to guests lining up outside. Orders are placed directly at the counter or through an app, speeding up the process, although the noise – whether from the sizzling fryers or the conversations of guests – can occasionally be perceived as intense. Nevertheless, the experience remains positive for most, supported by the team's warm demeanor and their ability to accommodate special requests.

The "Rock and Sole Plaice" is an integral part of London’s culture, reflecting the historical significance of fish and chips as a British national dish. It attracts a broad clientele – from theatergoers to families to tourists seeking an authentic British experience. Its sustainable focus on locally sourced fish and adherence to a traditional recipe make it a place that embodies authenticity and quality. It’s a venue that doesn’t need embellishments but impresses with its emphasis on good food and an unpretentious atmosphere.

A classic London fish & chips spot with history dating back to 1871. The batter is crispy, the fish fresh, and the chips thick-cut and golden. The proper king prawns is crunchy and well-seasoned, paired nicely with sweet chili sauce. Tartar sauce is creamy and flavorful, adding the perfect touch. Friendly service and a great Covent Garden location make it a must-visit. A solid 5/5 for an authentic British experience!

The halibut fish and chips was out of this world delicious 🤤 Crispy batter, yet moist and flaky fish inside. Everything seems to be high quality and home made. I highly recommend this place.

A mixed experience- the fish was, as expected, cooked to perfection, chips were crispy, although generally not that much better than fishnchip shop cooking I found. Prices are STEEP - £23 for Rock cod and chips, drinks are extortionate and the £5 service charge is an absolute joke. We paid £47 for a meal for two, including two cans of coke. I get the appeal of location and the sauces, but it really shocked me how much we paid to eat. Loads of hidden costs too, VAT and booking fee. Overall, a good dining experience overall, but would not go again without a fatter wallet.

The best place in Central London to have fish and chips, they have different types of haddock and cod, and the curry sauce is simply divine. Reasonably price considering the location and the very clean and neat environment.

I so much loved the Irish and fish. And the quality of the meal was amazing too. I would recommend it here without reservation and I will visit next time.
